By 2020, it is predicted that video streaming will be 82% of the global community's internet. This means that it will consume consistent amounts of global energy. Sites that will contribute to this will be Netflix and Youtube. Submerged data centers show strong promises of being more energy efficient than on land. Microsoft has launched this project in 2014 known as Project Natick that does exactly that.
I am constantly streaming videos and so it makes sense that it will consume global energy. I binge watch netflix all the time and think nothing of it. It is crazy to think that every little thing can alter our environment and if everyone is video streaming there can easily be a problem. The Project Natick seems to be a promising solution. It is incredible that underwater data centers could help our environment.
