Although experts say it is a bad time to cut back as Donald Trump promises to roll back international climate efforts, the UK did not listen and chose to anyway. However, internationall, the UK's decision to cut back was respected and was thought to be a contriution towards the run-up to the Paris agreement. Many find it appalling that the number of staff have reduced and feel that it sends a bad signal to the government. However, a government spokeswomen argues that even with this cutback the UK's commitment and leadership on climate action is stronger than ever.
Personally, I feel that the UK did not have any particular reason for the cutback on the staff and I agree with the opinions of many that it sends a bad signal. If the UK was as committed as they said they were they would be using all those workers to find a solution towards climate change rather than cutting back. I do not understand why they felt the need to cut back when the American president, Donald Trump, will go against them in the fight for climate change. Instead of cutting back they should be gathering resources to remain strong.
